Training Opportunities

WES offers training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students who are seeking degrees in psychology, social work, and related fields. These opportunities include supervised practicums and internships and are offered through several different programs in Philadelphia. Below is specific information about WES’ Post-Doctoral Internship at the Assessment & Evaluation Center in Philadelphia.

Post-Doctoral Internship

WES Community Mental Health offers two post-doctoral internships for individuals who have completed a doctoral degree program in psychology and are preparing for licensure. Post-doctoral interns at WES are based in the Assessment & Evaluation Center (A&E Center). The A&E Center provides mental health evaluation services for a diverse, urban population of individuals of ages five and above. The A&E Center is staffed by licensed psychologists, masters-level clinicians, and program support staff. The post-doctoral intern’s focus in the A&E Center is to provide evaluations of children, adolescents, and adults that include a DSM-IV-R diagnosis and specific treatment recommendations. In addition, the post-doctoral intern and his/her supervisor determine other clinical responsibilities that the post-doctoral intern will have during his or her one-year internship. These responsibilities will be determined based on the post-doctoral intern’s professional development and career objectives. They could include any of the activities listed below.

  • Providing outpatient therapy to children, adolescents, adults, and/or families.
  • Conducting group therapy with adults or adolescents.
  • Developing and facilitating training workshops for clients or WES clinicians.
  • Collaborating with WES’ Crisis Program to assist individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
  • Providing consultations to WES’ clinical staff.
  • Developing and implementing clinical initiatives to help WES better serve the community.
  • Attending trainings offered through the annual WES Institute or WES’ monthly Lunch & Learn workshop series.
  • Supervising masters-level practicum students.
  • Planning, conducting, and documenting clinical research.

All post-doctoral interns receive weekly supervision with one of the four licensed psychologists in the A&E Center and from one of the Directors of an outpatient program at WES.

All post-doctoral internships at WES are full-time and one year in duration. The annual salary is competitive and based on experience. The post-doctoral internships do not include benefits but do include nine paid holidays and seven vacation days.
