Therapeutic massage

In an effort to provide total wellness, WESWay Wellness also offers an array of therapeutic massages and reflexology services.

Merriam-Webster defines “massage” as the “manipulation of tissues (as by rubbing, kneading, or tapping) with the hand or an instrument for therapeutic purposes.” Over time, massages can yield a number of general benefits:

    • Improved concentration
    • Reduced mental stress
    • Lowered levels of anxiety
    • Enhanced creative expression
    • Better sleep patterns

There are a variety of different massage techniques in existence today. WESWay Wellness Center offers the following ones to its clients:*

Swedish Massage This classic Western massage technique combines kneading and long strokes to improve a client’s circulation and to relax and loosen muscles. Swedish massages can successfully shorten recovery time from muscular strains; they can also increase blood flow and muscle tone.

Deep Tissue Massage Deep tissue massages increase the supply of nutrients and oxygen to one’s body by improving overall circulation. They also help enhance the body’s elimination of the toxic by-products of exercise.

Sports Massage Sports massages can reduce the chance of injury by loosening connective tissues and muscles—they can improve a person’s range of motion and muscle flexibility, ultimately shortening his or her recovery time between workouts. Sports massages can be beneficial both before and after exercise sessions. For example, a massage before a 5k or 10k race can reduce the chance of injuries from this long-term exertion.

Reiki “Reiki” is Japanese for “universal life force energy.” Practitioners of this Japanese healing art act as a conduit to channel a client’s energy to restore his or her balance and harmony. During a reiki session, the client remains fully clothed. (In the other forms of massage described on this page, the client normally removes all clothing except his or her underwear, and towels or blankets are used for privacy as needed.)

Reflexology Reflexology is based on the premise that there are reflex areas or zones in the hands and feet that correspond to one’s body parts. Reflexology provides relief for many discomforts, including general aches and pains; headaches, including migraines; stress and tension; insomnia; and menstrual pain.
